My Two Cents: 101

Auguste Roc

"His job is on the line..."

That is what Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said to Joe Torre, the team manager, the day before the New York Yankees were knocked out of the American League playoffs in a final loss to the Cleveland Indians.

I've tried to imagine what it might be like to try and win a game at that level, with a threat like that hanging over my head:

Would I be free to think clearly and focus on the needs of my team?

Would I be distracted and worried about every decision that I needed to make?

Would I be secure enough in my standing to provide the foundation of optimism that is necessary if the desired result is a win?

"You will be fired if you don't win ...",

is a helluva send-off if what you want is a World Series Championship.

Scare tactics and pressure will never bring out the best in anyone under any set of circumstances. Threatening might, from time to time, produce a win, but it will never ever inspire anyone -

to do their very best.

That's my two cent's (for whatever it's worth).
